About Kyle…

kyle_beach2.jpgKyle Petrarca Johnson was a very courageous 9-year old boy who lost his 16-month battle with a brain tumor on July 5, 2001. He was an amazing child whose life touched so many people. The cancer struck swiftly, and his amazing courage and spirit had an enormous impact on all those who knew and loved him. The Kyle P. Johnson Memorial Fund was established after his death to help fund pediatric brain tumor research, and to provide financial support to his classmates, school, and favorite youth sport — soccer.

Why the Lighthouse Logo and all the Red??

The lighthouse logo you see on the various items from the KPJ Memorial Tournament was taken from an original drawing Kyle created for a project in the third grade at the Walter J. Paton Elementary School in Shrewsbury, MA.

Kyle’s fascination with lighthouses began at the home of “Lowie & Cap,” dear family friends, who had amassed a very large collection  of miniature lighthouse replicas. Soon, Kyle and his dad began their own collection, and Kyle’s interest grew as the collection did.  His favorite came to be the Cape Neddick, Maine lighthouse, known as “Nubble Light.”

When the memorial fund and tournament, which bear his name were created, we felt it was only fitting to use something he created as a symbol of his legacy.

As for the red, that was Kyle’s favorite color.
